WHY IS MY SKIN RED

Updated: May 3, 2021

Developing diffused redness on skin may have many reasons. Speaking of which it may be due to emotional stress, chemical reaction, medication, digestive system, hormonal imbalance, lack of vitamin C, UV damage. All of these can lead to vascular system being impaired leaving redness on our skin.

GRADES OF REDNESS

Reactive skin with visible redness would suffer from inflammation at some point, to understand the extension of damage caused to vascular system we can grade all types of diffused redness and make decision on the actual condition of the skin.

GRADE 1 diffused redness. Usually seen on cheeks area with the history of eczema, KP or asthma. If untreated, can develop into more serious skin condition.

GRADE 2 couperose. Common to eye area, temple, cheeks, decollete. Commonly seen in sun damaged skin, pregnancy or menopause.

GRADE 3 telangiectasia. Very visible capillaries with blue undertones. Seen within delicate skins which lacks on collagen and elastin. Due to damage cause in skin, capillaries will appear as network not able to contract.

GRADE 4 telangiectasia. Larger veins more blue/purple

GRADE 5 rosacea. All of the above. Permanently aggravated skin, usually with little red bumps.

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS OF REACTIVE SKIN

One of the factors that comes up on top of the list of aggregators is deficiency of essential fatty acids called EFAD. Also, alcohol, medication, UV damage, pregnancy, lack of vitamin C or extreme temperature change will have big impact on skin redness.

"First step is to look inside your beauty bag in search of reactive substances that may cause damage and diffuse redness"

If not sure what is the cause of your capillary system being exposed, book a consultation with your therapist and go step by step through products being used, diet or medical history. Conditions like eczema, asthma, hay fever, allergies, vasodilating medicine are very common triggers of skin redness or rosacea. Foods like cayenne pepper, pomegranate, onions, cinnamon, garlic, tomatoes will also cause dilation of blood vessels leading to capillaries expanding in some extreme cases.

INDICATORS. DON'T MISS THE FIRST SIGN

When you feel sensitivity on your skin, that indicated changes related to:

  • Erythema

  • Oedema

  • Dryness

  • Stinging

  • Tightness

  • Hot itchy rash

  • Small blisters

  • Itchy eyes

Reduced natural skin barrier will have a knock on effect on sensitive skin leading to more serious skin conditions.

HOW TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY SKIN BARRIER AND PREVENT ROSACEA

By now we should know how important is our natural skin barrier, protecting our skin from outside world, pollutants, free radicals, UV damage, alcohol or even smoking.

Deficiency of EFA and impaired ACID MANTLE (protective barrier) have major impact on our skin condition. It is vital to keep good level of water and oils within not just skin but our entire system. When going through diet in a sense how your daily meal planning looks like, take Essential Fatty Acids into consideration. Look for supplements with good quality OMEGA 3 when not able to consume fatty fish, walnuts or eggs.

IN SALON TREATMENTS

Book yourself for extended consultation when suffering from diffused redness, bring along all products used at home to find out what may cause skin reaction and make a list of medication if any. Your therapist will then make a decision on home skin care and treatments. It usually starts from rebuilding skin barrier function before any advanced treatments. Also, cannot stress this enough, broad spectrum SPF skin protection is a must for every day use. It will keep your skin safe against UVA and UVB damage as well as premature skin ageing.
